Wycliffe’s vision is a world where everyone can know Jesus through the Bible. Wycliffe’s mission is to serve local partners world-wide as they bring God’s word to their communities in the language which speaks to them best. We are shaped by the conviction that the Bible is the word of God and is foundational for the great commission to make disciples of all nations.
In terms of need, there are 7397 languages in the world and c.3500 have no Scripture available to them (c.1 in 5 of the world’s population). However, Bibles and New Testaments are being launched at a rate of 2 per week, with a new language project starting every day.
As of April 2025, 773 languages have a whole bible, 1763 have New Testaments and 1361 have portions of Scripture. In all, c.4000 languages either have some scripture or work in progress.
352 people from the UK and Ireland work with Wycliffe UK (287 mission partners serving with Wycliffe, 45 employed staff, and 20 full or part-time volunteers, serving 583,482,090 people, who speak 323 languages and live in 62 countries around the world.
A significant part of each programme which Wycliffe supports relates to ‘Scripture engagement’ i.e. the use of Scripture in the local church, and with it, the desire and prayer for healthy local churches. Programmes are supported on a three-year funding cycle, with new programmes taken on each year after careful assessment by the International Partnerships team. These programmes will vary from country to country and may relate to pioneer evangelism (in unreached areas, often through translation as a means of literacy) through to support of ‘Scripture engagement’ as Bibles become available. Increasingly Wycliffe is seeking to work with and alongside those organisations who work with indigenous churches and leaders to make this possible.
