Nat & Helen Schluter

Johannesburg, South Africa

Equipping men and women for Bible teaching ministries in southern Africa.

Nat served as the curate at Saint James, from 2000 to 2004. He and Helen were then invited to establish the Johannesburg Bible College, with a vision ‘to equip and inspire men and women for Bible teaching ministries. They were sent with the generous backing and prayerful support of the church family – a partnership that has been growing ever since. Nat and Helen have five young adult children: Miriam, Christopher, Bethany, Isaac and Azola.

The College had its first class in February 2005, with 12 students, meeting in a local church. Twenty years later, as well as the main Johannesburg campus, JBC operates in two local, urban townships (Soweto and Alexandra). In 2025, there are 400+ students enrolled across the three campuses. The college has run ‘training the trainer’ courses in Johannesburg, in other Southern African countries and online to enable other colleges to be set up or supported.

There are now sister colleges in Zimbabwe, Kwa Zulu Natal, Mozambique, Namibia, Malawi and Tanzania, and JBC supports other Bible colleges and ministry training in Africa. 80% of pastors in Sub-Saharan Africa run ministries without any formal training. JBC was the first college to be audited and accredited for the new professional qualification for pastoring in South Africa.

Nat heads up the staff team at JBC and is involved in the teaching and in staff recruitment. He increasingly spends time each year raising funds in South Africa and throughout the world to support the growing work of JBC, its three campuses and sister colleges. Helen works in the Alex campus 4 days each week as campus manager and lecturer.

Prayer Points

  • Please pray for safety for them, their family, friends, staff and students in this part of a world that can be dangerous.
  • Pray for wisdom and strength as Nat leads JBC, for the recruitment of staff and for fundraising in South Africa and beyond.
  • Pray for Nat to be fruitful as he travels to other southern African countries, speaking at conferences and encouraging their Bible teaching ministries.
  • Pray for Helen, as she works in the Alex campus 4 days each week, for safety especially, strength in a demanding role and caring for the family.
  • Pray for plans to write new courses across all campuses, to develop the Alex site in partnership with a local church, and to further develop the Soweto Campus.

When Nat & Helen left Saint James to start in Johannesburg, many in the church family came together to raise funds to cover the family’s living costs. If you would like to know more about how you can contribute towards their ongoing personal costs, please find more information below.
